Civil & Structural Engineering
Nancefield Primary School
In Soweto, the reconstruction of Nancefield Primary School has resumed after previous delays. In August 2024, the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development appointed Tholoenchu as the new contractor, setting a 12-month completion timeline. The project’s cost has escalated to R160 million, encompassing the construction of 28 classrooms, a new administration block, a laboratory/library, and sports facilities. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader efforts to enhance educational infrastructure in Gauteng.
Roads & Transportation Engineering
Msikaba bridge
The Msikaba Bridge, under construction near Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, is poised to become Africa’s longest cable-stayed bridge, featuring a main span of 580 meters. Its deck will sit 194 meters above the valley floor, ranking it among the continent’s highest bridges. Construction commenced in late 2019, with completion anticipated by the end of 2025. Valued at approximately R1.75 billion, the project has significantly benefited the local community. Specifically, it has engaged 157 local small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs), created around 453 full-time equivalent jobs—391 of which are occupied by locals—and provided skills development opportunities to over 700 residents.
Energy Generation Systems
Sonvanger Solar PV Power Plant: Tholoenchu, in partnership with Glencore’s South African ferroalloys unit and Merafe Resources, achieved financial closure for the 100 MW Sonvanger Solar PV Power Plant in the Free State province. This R2.1 billion project aims to supply clean energy to Glencore Merafe Venture’s ferrochrome smelters, thereby contributing to South Africa’s transition to renewable energy.
Witberg Wind Energy Project: Located approximately 10 km west of Matjiesfontein in the Western Cape, the Witberg Wind Energy Project is poised to become South Africa’s largest private wind farm, boasting a nameplate capacity of 108 MW and a contracted capacity of 103 MW. Developed by Red Rocket in partnership with Tholoenchu, this project represents a significant investment exceeding R3.4 billion. Upon completion, it will supply renewable energy to Sibanye-Stillwater’s operations through a 15-year power purchase agreement. Notably, construction commenced in December 2023, with commercial operations expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.
